“The last Incan city to resist against the Spanish conquerors”.

The archaeological site of CHOQUEQUIRAW is part of the complex system of Andean towns in the Vilcabamba Valley. In Incan times, it was united with Machu Picchu by a complex network of trails.

CHOQUEQUIRAW is located in the spurs of the Salkantay Mountain Range, at 3,035 m. above sea level, as it is surrounded by the snow-capped “Apus” (Mountain Spirits) of Yanama, Ampay, Choquecarpu, Pumasillo and Panta, on the right side of the Apurimac River.

CHOQUEQUIRAW is an Incan town composed of small sites spreaded out among rubblework, along with its adjoining constructions, thus forming a complex metropolis, similar to those of other Andean regions, by the fact that it is perched on the crest of the mountain that carries the same name: Choquequiraw.

1st DAY: We´ll leave Cusco at 5:00 a.m., to get to the small town of CACHORA at 7:30 a.m. There, we’ll load the equipment on mules and from that place we’ll be able to see the majestic PADRAYOC’s snow-covered peaks. On this first day, the hike is of almost 22 km. On the way, we’ll observe the PADRAYOC and WAYNA CACHORA snowfields, as we’ll be trekking to “PLAYA ROSALINA”, at 1,550 m. of altitude. Campsite in SANTA ROSA.

2ND DAY: At 5:00 a.m., we’ll continue our hike, going up to CHOQUEQUIRAW, where we’ll arrive after 5 hours. There, we’ll visit the three levels of the excavated part of the archeological site, where we’ll be able to see houses, agricultural terraces and other parts of this late Incan town, as well as the part of it which is being excavated and finally, unexplored areas that can give us more information about this last refuge of the oppressed Incan Empire. At about 3:00 p.m. (depending on the weather), we’ll be able to contemplate “the condors´ flight”. Campsite at CHOQUEQUIRAW and guided visit of the archaeological complex.

3rd DAY: Around 11:00 a.m., we’ll pack-up and head back to CHIQUISKA. On the way, we’ll be able to once again admire the Apurimac’s Canyon. There, if we are lucky, we’ll see the condors´ flight and will certainly have opportunities to observe the exuberant vegetation with its wide diversity of flowers and especially, orchids. The altitude change goes from 3,035 to 1,950 m. above sea level, as we’ll go by the same small settlements as we did on the way up.

4th DAY: At 5:00 a.m., we’ll move on with our trek, as it will take us around 7 hours to get to the small town of CACHORA. Later on, we’ll board our van to go back to CUSCO. On the way, we’ll make a stop in SAYHUITE and CCONOC. There, we’ll be able to enjoy the natural hot springs!! Arrival in CUSCO, at about 8:00 p.m.
